Some Current Issues in the Rise of Online Education
Online education has had an increasing presence in various forms of education: schooling, training, professional development and university programs. The rise of online education has been fuelled by a decade or more of promotional rhetoric together with financial and other material incentives. However, these developments have occurred principally in ‘developed’ nations and have also favoured the wealthier communities within these nations.
There is a range of concerns arising from the use of online media in education. These include the misuse/use of the Internet by children and adults, the displacement of ‘traditional’ educational skills and experiences by online skills and experiences, the costs of sustaining viable IT infrastructure, and the globalisation/homegenisation of curricula and pedagogies. This presentation will provide an overview of the rise of online education and the consequences for educational institutions. It will present some current concerns and prompt questions, comment and discussion about the rise of online education.
