I'm glad that my first trip with my family to Fraser's Hill (State: Pahang - District: Raub - 1524m above sea level) was a wonderful one. In fact, we are planning to come again and stay a few days longer. I personally think that Fraser's Hill as a Malaysian highland tourist destination is so much better compared to Cameron Highland.
Fraser's has its own charm; the cold weather (15-19C), the colonial buildings in the downtown area with the must-take-photo's clock tower, the great lodging uphill, the mystery surrounding Louis James Fraser's disappearance, the beautiful Ye Old Smokehouse, the bird watching spots (apparently there are lots of them and famous among world's birdwatchers enthusiast), the waterfalls, the different nature trails, etc.
Please check out Wikipedia and Wikitravel entries on Fraser's Hill. The Wikitravel entry has some good information on traveling options, lodging, things to do, etc.
We stayed at the Silver Park service apartment. The trip from KL took about 90 minutes; exited Rawang from PLUS highway and passed some Hulu Selangor towns. Kuala Kubu Bharu (KKB) was the last town before the long winding 19km uphill road to the peak. If you decided to only use two cars instead of three, you can leave that one car at the KKB's police station. In the old days, there was only one road to and fro making it challenging for motorists. Nowadays, the roads going up and down splits at The Gap House.
Fraser's Hill was built by the British to get away from hot weather. They certainly loved golfing that one of the first Malaya's golf course was built and still look beautiful against the greenery and at times in fog and mist which I suppose providing golfers here a different experience. There are two different golf course:
- Fraser's Hill Golf and Country Club (18 holes)
- Royal Fraser's Hill Golf Club (9 holes)
We tried another form of golf, the croquet (woodball) - for 10 bucks you could try this game where you putt at four different gates to make the ball passes through two wooden opening (like goal post) instead of holes. I had so much fun that I'm thinking to play for few hours the next time visiting there.
There are also horse riding and archery activities for you to try. Food tip: try the goreng pisang (banana fritters) or nasi lemak or teh tarik or rojak buah or laksa at the warong. We definitely love the goreng pisang!!! Perhaps, I'd also bring tennis racket in my next trip - there are some tennis court and it'd be so much fun to play in the cold weather.
We brought LOTS of food - sandwiches, pulut durian, rice, marinated chicken-lamb and sausages, fries, for BBQ, bread, etc. The evening when we were supposed to have our BBQ, it rained heavily with thunderstorms. The whole area went blackout for about 90 minutes before we got our power supply. Lucky for us, there were a couple of candles in the kitchen cabinet - enough light for us to have good storytelling time - as usual the ghost stories!
The apartment we stayed in was equipped with karaoke equipments; two mic, big hi-fi, some CDs, and DVD player (which can also play DivX!!!). Hehehe - I enjoy singing Love Song - first time I sang the song from one of my favorite movies, Love Story. They use clips from Breakfast at Tiffany's as the music video.
Here are some of the photos from the trip:
