The thriving E&E industry in the southern part of Penang Island is the true manifestation to a sustainable development model, thanks to the visionary outlook of its chief minister back then in mid-70s. Today, value-added activities such as R&D centers, design, IT as well as the traditional activity of manufacturing are carried out here making it one of the major semiconductor hub for the region and globally.
Other than manufacturing, the four phases of Free Industrial Zone are also home to some jewellery, germent, and other products manufacturing centers. The government recently decided to include Bayan Lepas in the Multimedia Super Corridor.
On the other hand, the northern part of the island; blessed with beautiful sandy beaches generates revenue from tourism, thanks to its beautiful sandy beaches. The middle part of the island generally bustling with governmental, educational, financial, and other B2C, B2B activities.
Uniquely, I found out that these three different geographical regions give it different facet and outlook to this island. Besides all these, what make this island unique is the melting pot of cultures, buildings, and FOOD!!! Where there are like 2 main mamak chains that have 24 hours restaurant operating in like 5-7 outlets. Too bad I am not a fan of nasi kandar. This is where the laksa is still RM2.00!!!
